Activities abound in the area around Murphy. Eight major lakes feature 8,700 acres of clear water for swimming, fishing, water skiing, boating, and camping in designated areas. Hiwassee Lake is the largest lake and one of the most scenic in the county. Outdoor enthusiasts will find an endless playground for many activities such as hunting, ATV and superior freshwater fishing in the lakes and streams – trout fishing is open almost year round. Boat docks and rentals are available at area marinas while whitewater rafting on calm and not so calm rivers, is popular for fun family outings. Golf is the game of choice on several challenging golf courses and mountain trails beckon horseback riders. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a hiker’s paradise with over 800 miles of maintained trails ranging from short leg-stretchers to strenuous treks that may require backcountry camping. Sightseeing is a must: The renowned John C. Campbell Folk School located on 380 acres in Cherokee County is a craft and folk arts center featuring classes, performances and other attractions. There’s an endless array of day-trips to nearby Asheville, Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, Cades Cove, Joyce Kilmer Forest, Cherohala Skyway, Chimney Rock and dozens of small towns and back roads throughout Western North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee. |
